I created this series to visually encapsulate the transformative journey of self-care and spiritual awakening through different stages of life. My aim was to emphasise the importance of maintaining a connection with one’s inner child and inner person, alongside a mystical spirit animal, represented here by the lion. Through these images, I hope to portray young Black girls, women, and Black Elders from the African Diaspora, illustrating the continuity and depth of spiritual strength that transcends age. Each stage, from childhood to old age, reflects a deepening of wisdom, self-awareness, and spiritual balance. The lion, as a constant and powerful guardian, symbolises courage, resilience, and the profound connection to ancestral roots and inner strength that these women carry with them throughout their lives. I love to use vibrant colours and mystical imagery in my work, reflecting beauty at all ages and focusing on the enduring beauty and spiritual depth of Black womanhood across generations. I hope this series resonates with that spirit.
