“Who in the world am I? Ah, that’s the great puzzle,” said Alice. If Alice’s adventures reveal things about who we are, what we are, the world, our initiatory paths, descents, ascents, shadows, crises, trials, obstacles, nightmares, and the incessant search for meaning, it is an invitation to reread Alice as a challenge to reinvent life.
Alice’s adventures are full of obstacles, paradoxes, conflicts, and anguish, at the same time rich in keys and doors for learning, healing, and transformation. As the Cheshire Cat said, the path one follows depends on where you want to get to, and this is renewed with each reading. We travel through symbolic layers, rites of passage, games of being or nonbeing facing falls, madness, death and rebirth, awakening. Is life really a dream as Lewis Carroll suggested? The writer Paulo Mendes Campos gave a copy of Wonderland to his daughter Maria da Graça, and said about it in a letter: “This book is mad, Maria. That is: its meaning is in you.”
The book you hold in your hands is a dive into the unknown, with Alice as the map, Artificial Intelligence (AI) as the vehicle, and my intuition as the compass. After years of conversations with Alice in the most diverse readings, arts, and languages during this journey of incessant reimagining, I decided to create a project with images generated with AI, which is much more challenging than it seems at the first glance. I used the Midjourney V.6, Photoshop Beta, and Topaz Gigapixel AI. The prompts — command texts used to generate the images — were created with descriptions, styles, parameters, photos of my own dolls and assemblages, challenging incessant experimentation in a process of multiple transformations.
