"Dense Emptiness" is a work that explores the balance between Korean traditional clothing's identity and modern interpretation. In particular, the Korean Gat (traditional hat) has unique proportions and forms that distinguish it from other traditional hats in East Asia. In this project, artificial intelligence was used to analyze and modernly reinterpret the precise balance of the Korean Gat's unique horizontal and vertical ratios, and the width and height of its brim.
The aesthetics of emptiness and void in traditional Hanbok are expressed through layered silhouettes in pure white. While appearing abundant and full on the outside, it embodies the philosophy of emptiness within. AI was utilized to find the perfect balance between these contrasting elements - fullness and emptiness, heaviness and lightness.
The form of the Gat plays a crucial role in modernly reinterpreting Korean traditional aesthetics. The precise proportions derived through AI analysis maintain the identity of the traditional Korean Gat while adding contemporary elegance. This is not simply an imitation of form, but an attempt to reinterpret the essence of tradition in modern language.
The overall silhouette of the garment has also been reconstructed based on Hanbok's unique curved aesthetics. The layered textures and bold volume are the result of a modern interpretation of the elegant lines of traditional Hanbok. Through this, while preserving the identity of Korean traditional clothing, it presents new possibilities for communication in global fashion language.
This work demonstrates how contrasting values - tradition and modernity, emptiness and fullness, restraint and boldness - can coexist harmoniously. Artificial intelligence was used as an important tool in finding this aesthetic balance, successfully revealing and modernizing the identity of Korean traditional clothing more clearly.
