Born in South Korea and raised in America, my journey as a third culture kid has always existed in the space between the East and the West. This piece is more than art – it's a visual autobiography exploring cultural identity through pattern and symbolism. I chose to reimagine the sophisticated French Toile de Jouy through the lens of Korean artistic traditions. The tiger, Korea's spiritual guardian, breaks free from toile's traditional monochrome in vibrant orange, symbolizing the emergence of cultural identity. While maintaining the characteristic blue palette and intricate narrative scenes of toile, I weave in elements of Korean art, creating something entirely new. This piece tells the story of countless third culture individuals who navigate multiple identities. It's about finding beauty in the blend of heritage and creating something uniquely authentic. Rather than choosing between two worlds, "Toile de Seoul" celebrates the art of cultural fusion – where tradition meets transformation, and identity finds its own voice.

Creative Process: My approach began with careful curation of srefs then blending them to create Toile de Jouy patterns with Korean art elements. Through precise prompt engineering, I guided the AI to understand and merge these distinct artistic traditions. Starting with a 1:1 aspect ratio served dual purposes: it provided a clean foundation for testing compositions and ensured versatility for future applications, particularly in textile design and commercial patterns. This square format allows for seamless tiling and adaptation across various design applications. The result is a methodical fusion of cultural elements and technical precision, creating artwork that's both artistically authentic and commercially adaptable.
