Synaptic City – High Rise
Konrad Kołtun · Poland
Social & Short-Form
My first high-rise series originates from an idea of tower clusters rather than standalone buildings. The idea being that one could either share adjacent interstitial spaces to enable more complex activities, or that building codes could allow very close clustering for business use if the cluster belongs to a single entity. This would allow for far more intense building densities on expensive city-centre plots. Based on this, a reinterpretation of the synaptic city concept is being developed. Rather than focusing on flexibility (which is often the case), it focuses on the synaptic nature of the interstitial space, where exchanges between functions happen, but which also allows for more complex operational and organisational activities to play out. This idea is to be developed further at other scales and typologies. The form of the various proposed towers strongly follows structural building logics, expressing rather than hiding the outrigger floor-required both for stiffening the structure and for boosting building services against gravity. In the visually clustered examples, this expands to accommodate a vast array of sociological arrangements. The synapse is to be read in the building forms as a result. The concept follows on from the Eisenman/Koolhaas Möbius strip idea present in the CCTV buidling. Something similar was also present in proposals like the New York Five's competition entry for the World Trade Center site. Instead of forcing an obvious diagram onto these clusters, I'm exploring how the synapse - the diagram can grow organically from the building logics and societal arrangements themselves.
Common art prompt: "An award-winning, hyperrealistic architectural render of a trio of interconnected supertall skyscrapers. The towers are conceived as being carved from a single, monolithic form, showcasing a unified and fluid design with sensuous, biomorphic curves. The facade is a seamless skin of reflective, high-performance glass and polished white concrete, capturing the warm, dramatic light of the golden hour. The composition is set within a bustling, futuristic metropolis, with long, elegant shadows stretching across the urban landscape. Photographed with a telephoto lens to emphasize the monumental scale."
