Vision of Future Cities: In the world of tomorrow, cities confront intricate challenges: climate change, environmental crises, population overload, resource scarcity, and a diminishing quality of life. Urban spaces have adopted a gray veneer, with hope fading amid the rigid, lifeless buildings lining the streets. Living environments lack the flexibility to align with the shifting demands of the era, unable to adapt to the future awaiting cities. Yet, in this age, buildings are no longer mere static, inert masses. We are witnessing a quiet yet radiant revolution—one that empowers us to mold the future with our own hands and envision tomorrow with unprecedented clarity. In this future, artificial intelligence (AI) and cutting-edge technologies serve not only as tools to address urban dilemmas but also as a transformative force, redefining the bond between humanity, space, and the urban landscape. Project Goal: Living Structures in New York: This project aims to create forward-looking structures in New York City that, akin to living organisms, perpetually grow and transform. These structures possess the ability to interact with humans and their surroundings, engaging in self-organization. Constructed from smart, controllable materials—endowed with flexible and adaptive qualities—they dynamically assess environmental conditions, adjusting their form, scale, stability, and functionality in response. Outfitted with sensors that detect shifts in their environment, these structures converse with people and nature, continually aligning themselves with the evolving demands of urban existence. These intelligent constructs, resembling living urban ecosystems, strike a harmony between technology and the natural world, forging a space where humans and structures share a vibrant coexistence, breaking free from stagnation and inertia. Inspired by the philosopher "Heraclitus" and his concept of "panta rhei", we hold that “The only constant in life is change.” Our salvation and future hinge on adapting to this ever-flowing world. Harnessing the collective strength of humanity alongside AI, we possess the power to shape what lies ahead. Thus, we looked anew and embarked on a journey with AI to conceive the Morphing Metropolis—an artificial entity that breathes, its life entwined with human existence, its future tethered to the enduring vitality of all city dwellers. Core Idea: Architecture as a Living System: The essence of this project lies in transcending conventional architecture and stepping into a new era—one where architecture is no longer a mere servant of functional needs but a living system that regenerates itself, responds to the desires of its users, and intelligently lays a stronger foundation for life in future cities. These structures embody a response to inevitable changes, reflecting the evolution of artificial intelligence within architecture. By fusing technology with the dynamism of the city, they dissolve the divide between ecosystem and innovation, offering a fresh terrain for growth and advancement in the future—a future that flows as a living current, propelling humanity to new heights.
Our primary inspirations derive from prominent architectural and conceptual art sources: from Zaha Hadid and Daniel Arsham, whose bubble-like structures and organic fractal forms convey a futuristic dynamism; from Bjarke Ingels, whose innovative urban viewpoints illustrate the essence of contemporary architecture; and from Philippe Starck, whose artistic and decorative details add visual and narrative depth to the rendering. Moreover, the fluid and dynamic characteristics of ferrofluid reinforce a sense of motion and transformability, resulting in an ever-evolving, vibrant image.
