A Mnemekon is an artifact designed to crystallise and preserve memories in physical form. Its structural complexity is not random: every shape, texture, and hue corresponds to a lived experience, translated into a physical formation. It is the result of brain impulses encoded into a unique memory landscape. Similarly to a vinyl record, Mnemekons are imprinted. The printing begins with the preparation of a blank substrate, a hybrid of crystalline mineral and bio gel that hovers in a state between solid and fluid. Once placed within a resonance cradle, the substrate is linked to a subject through a neural interface that translates patterns of brain activity into vibrations. As the subject recalls experiences, the vibrations ripple outward, imprinting themselves into the plasmatic material. Each memory produces different crystallisations: it is believed that vivid or significant memories solidify into large, radiant growths, while fleeting impressions remain as faint, delicate protrusions, although some studies argue there is not a clear correlation. When the process is complete, the substrate hardens into a permanent lattice, becoming a database for that particular memory. No two Mnemekons are the same, because each memory is subjective. To read a mnemekon, it is placed in a scanning chamber and connected to the subject by another neural interface. The mnemekon’s crystalline architecture is scanned and translated into signals fed directly into the subject’s prefrontal cortex, activating the same sensory circuits that once processed the original experience. The result is not a projection observed from the outside, but an immersion from within: the subject’s senses are compelled into reliving the memory as if it were unfolding in real time. Visuals, sounds, scents, sensations come to life within the mind’s eye, often persisting after use. Extended exposure to someone else’s mnemekon can overwrite a user’s sense of self, blurring the border between memories. A Mnemekon functions simultaneously as a data storage and an ornamental artifact. Its unique topography makes it irreplaceable and impossible to reproduce.
