Local Surrealities is a visual exploration of Cyprus through a surrealist lens, where everyday objects of Mediterranean life like fruit stalls, figs, citrus, donkeys, cacti, are reimagined as symbols of cultural identity, nostalgia, and playful absurdity. The series transforms familiar elements of the island into dreamlike compositions: glitter-dusted grapes become sacred offerings, lemons sparkle like jewels, a donkey balances on a rooftop, and fruit stands carry cryptic commands such as “EAT US” or “NOT FREE.” By merging authenticity with fantasy, the project reflects on the duality of Cypriot life, rooted in tradition yet constantly reinventing itself. Blending hyper-real photography with surreal interventions, Local Surrealities creates a poetic commentary on belonging, consumption, and the shifting meaning of “local.” It challenges viewers to reconsider how the ordinary can become extraordinary when viewed through imagination.
