Notes Beneath Stone. Hidden within the majestic sandstone formations of AL ULA rocks in Saudi Arabia desert, Dar El Oud is an architectural ode to Arabian perfume culture. An immersive journey into the soul of Oud. This project reimagines the museum typology not as an object in the landscape, but as a spatial whisper embedded within the desert’s memory. Externally, the architecture disappears. The project embraces "hidden architecture", integrated invisibly into the existing rock masses of AL ULA, allowing the natural heritage to remain untouched and undisturbed. Visitors discover the museum not by its volume, but by entering a carved passage in the rock, as if drawn into a secret. Inside, the space unfolds into a fluid, parametric landscape, where architecture mimics the undulating layers of both the sandstone and perfume notes. Dark sculpted wood flows across walls and ceilings in rhythmic formations, blending seamlessly into the rock. These layered geometries are inspired by the complexity of Oud deep, smoky, earthy, and ancient. Lighting plays a poetic role: sunlight filters through a 360-degree carved "mashrabiya" perforated ceiling, casting dappled patterns that evolve with the hours, creating a mystic and sacred aura. Visitors encounter perfume not on shelves, but through ritualized sensory experiences: inserting their heads into niche voids carved into the wooden walls, or breathing in from hanging glass tubes suspended like drops of scent in the air. The spatial narrative is not linear. Instead, like a perfume, it unfolds in base, heart, and top notes. From the minimal entry to the warm inner sanctum, every curve, scent, light beam, and surface invites contemplation. The journey is sensual and slow, a meditation on memory, scent, and architecture. Cultural Significance: Dar El Oud is a tribute to the intangible heritage of Arabian perfumes, especially Oud, the resin of memory and luxury. Located in AL ULA, a place of profound cultural depth, the museum respects the land, merges with it, and invites visitors to explore scent as history, ritual, and identity. This is not merely a museum. It is a sensorial sanctuary, a cave of scent, a vessel for emotion designed to echo in the nose, eyes, skin, and soul.
