The Cheshire Cat Press has created the first North American AI-co-written edition of Alice in Wonderland, using AI to generate unique illustrations and reimagine Lewis Carroll's fantastical text. This hardcover is 84 full-colour pages, signed and numbered by the artists, and limited to an edition of 42. Measurements: 6.25" x 9.25"

Beyond the Rabbit Hole: Generative AI’s Magic on Alice’s World In a world where creativity mingles with algorithms, Andy Malcolm and I have embarked on a playful adventure of our own. Armed with generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, we set out to recreate the tale of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. We delved into the world of AI, like two playful Cheshire Cats weaving through Lewis Carroll’s language and creatively envisioned art. With inquisitive minds, we navigated through the digital realms of ChatGPT, Midjourney, and Adobe Photoshop’s AI tools, crafting a mix of fantastical, surreal, and occasionally unsuccessful illustrations. At times, the AI’s creativity didn’t quite capture our vision, notably struggling to accurately depict a Dodo bird, its likeness as if lost in the enigmatic depths of Wonderland. And the Caterpillar, oh dear, it struggled to sit on a mushroom and puff elegantly on its hookah pipe. Often, our results resembled a bizarre blue bug without legs, sporting a strange grin and clown makeup, perched atop a cream puff. However, undeterred by these initial setbacks, we pressed on with determination and creativity. We combined and modified various inspirations until our envisioned designs materialized. Throughout this process, a hint of uncertainty and subtle concerns persisted. Given the AI’s limited design capabilities, we relied heavily on our ingenuity for the layout. Additionally, the generative AI’s lack of ethical judgment left us questioning the origins of the elements it incorporated into our creations. This book, our bold experiment, challenges us to reconsider the essence of art. Can art remain original if created with AI assistance? Would the original author recognize their words in this transformed narrative? These questions weave throughout the pages we have created. The answers are as elusive as the Cheshire Cat. However, one thing is certain: we delight in the playful intersection of ideas and technology, where the boundaries between words, imagination, and algorithms are delightfully obscured. Alice in Wonderland has long been celebrated for playfully challenging societal norms and exploring themes of identity and curiosity, appealing to readers across generations. By reinterpreting this classic through generative AI, we venture beyond the traditional limits of time, space, and imagination. We invite readers to explore a reimagined Wonderland where the absurd meets the avant-garde and creativity reaches new heights. This digital transformation not only revitalizes a literary masterpiece but also prompts us to consider the deep implications of AI on visual and literary culture. As AI algorithms refine their abilities, the distinction between human and machine creativity increasingly merges. What would Alan Turing, the pioneer who fundamentally shaped our understanding of computational limits with his Turing Test, think of this evolution? We are on a fascinating journey to explore AI’s creative capabilities and its underlying mechanics. Prepare to challenge your perceptions of originality and authenticity as AI-generated art reshapes traditional creative paradigms. We stand at the brink of a digital revolution where imagination is driven by rapid-fire algorithms. This raises some important questions: Is it still human if it is machine-generated? Has this new interpretation become a consciousness? Can art be self-aware? Can a machine make art if art is a uniquely human endeavour? As we venture further into computing machinery and intelligence, we are confronted with an ever-growing tapestry of questions regarding the nature of visual and written communications. In his book Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man, Marshall McLuhan introduced the concept ‘the medium is the message.’ This idea is exemplified by AI, where the medium itself becomes the message. This raises questions about AI-generated art: Can algorithms produce original art, or are they merely reconfiguring existing elements? Additionally, does an author still recognize their work when AI transforms it? The transformative power of generative AI to reshape visual and written works elicits awe and trepidation as we question the very essence of artistic creation. Yet, in the face of uncertainty, we find solace in the joy of play, in the dance between human ingenuity and artificial intelligence. This book, born from our playful collaboration with artificial intelligence, is a testament to the boundless possibilities between human imagination and the machine. We hope you enjoy this experiment as you delve into the unlimited possibilities at the intersection of art and technology.
